Welcome to High Country Dulcimers

In early summer Clarence “Mac” McKinney had a heart attack complicated by double pneumonia. As a result the shop will only be open on weekends until he fully recovers. Thank you for your understanding and prayers.

Clarence "MAC" McKinney and Clarence "CE" Kenyon have been building the finest hand-made hammered dulcimers, mountain dulcimers, bowed Psalteries, and more for decades.  WBTV News in Charlotte, North Carolina boasts that Mac's instruments are the finest instruments found anywhere in the whole world. WBTV has had several TV spots saying just that.

Our web site is finally ready to help you acquire some exceptional hand-crafted instruments that come from western North Carolina; the central hub of blue grass with the likes of flat pickin' with Doc Watson.  Western North Carolina is famous for high density of artisans; to find such a shop south of Boone, NC is a convenient location for the rest of America to find us.

Our web site now has a shopping cart section where you can browse about.

A reminder - every instrument is made using time-proven techniques and only the best materials.  There is no such thing as "good-better-best" here at High Country Dulcimers.  What is possible to find, however is an instrument that fits the octave range you need and that fits the level of difficulty you want.  We offer instruments that are easy to handle and just as easy to learn for beginners.  We have instruments for the professionals.

Many professional dulcimer recording artists have come here so that they can get the best.  Our 5-octave hammered dulcimer may be a one-of-a-kind in America.  Most hammered dulcimers max out at 3.5 octaves.

High Country Dulcimers has showroom and shop on Hwy 105 near Boone, NC.  Come on in and visit the new sales room.  So come on in and explore about.
